What is a Short Film?
A short film is a narrative condensed into a smaller time frame. It uses significant scenes to drive the narrative and ideologies forward. Short films are good for new filmmakers because it enables them to practice the techniques and skills of filmmaking. It's a lot less effort, less time consuming and less expensive than a feature film which means it's easier and cheaper for those on smaller budgets.
There are many codes and conventions of a short film like having, a smaller budget, condensed narrative (3 act structure rather than 5), moral messages which covey a theme, less dialogue, less character development, improvisation and public locations. A short film is usually one person's conception rather than a whole production. Whereas, feature films have bigger budgets, SFX/CGI, time for character development, more dialogue, professional actors. They would also have advertising/marketing, they could be franchised and there would be industry constraints. Any film over 40 minutes is considered a feature film.
